Travel Guide to The World's Most Famous UFO Destination
Rachel, Nevada (June 2007)
I had never seen a UFO and I'm not sure whether
that changed or not during my first visit to Area 51. I have very
different criteria for what constitutes a UFO than most people probably
do. Mine are the three characteristics described to me by The Colonel in "UFOs: The Colonel Speaks". This means you're looking
for something that is almost more of a phenomenon than some kind of
"ship" or "craft". Still, I can now personally vouch for the fact that
there are very weird things in the skies outside Area 51.
Rachel, Nevada is the home of the
Little A'Le'Inn, a world-famous UFO destination, featuring international visitors
and an upbeat environment. By the time you get out there, you're 110 miles
from a gas station, far from cell phone reception and in a world where
local ranchers drive Crown Vics and a photograph of a local is deadly
serious business (so watch where you point your camera). The only
communication to the outside world (for non-locals) is an
operator-assistance-only pay phone. You've wandered into an episode of the
X-Files.
While you're visiting, bear in mind that there
are Two Things to look for:
1. What They Want You to See
2. What They DON'T Want You to See
The first two photos illustrate Number 2, in my
opinion, what they don't want you to see. The second two
photos illustrate Number 1, what they do what they do want you to
see.
Rachel's Abandoned RV Park:
The photo above shows the abandoned RV park
in Rachel. If you download this and zoom in you will see a saucer-shaped
object (assuming that it's moving side to side), which we did not notice when taking the picture. The camera is an older Sony Mavica set to
1024 (highest res). Obviously, the object is blurred and could be anything (even a clever trick played on a tourist).
It's hard to gauge the distance and, not
having observed it at the time, no other conclusions can really be drawn. There
seem to be some clouds in the distance and the relative humidity was 3%
(for the record).
Photoshop Enhanced:
Here is the Photoshop-enhanced object
that I
inadvertently photographed. I used the "Sharpen" function from the
'Filter' menu over and over (hence the weird lines - there wasn't much
there to be sharpened). I then went to "Adjust Backlighting" from the
'Enhance' menu. You may be able to download the original photo (which is
full-res) and do
better. Clearly, it does seem to be a symmetrical object, almost a classic
"flying saucer". On the other hand,
check out this drone from a British air show in '06. There is a
distinct similarity (if the object was coming towards us).
Drone or Saucer?
IF this was a drone, here's a possible scenario:
1. The drone is heading towards Rachel just as I
snapped the photo
2. It's far enough away that we didn't notice it
and it banked away
3. Because the photo was taken head-on, it looks
saucer-shaped
4. Due to the viewing angle, the fuselage and
tail may not be visible
5. Or... it really is saucer-shaped.
Light In The Sky
At the Little A'Le'Inn we learn about the
"Black Mailbox", which is known around the world as the place to
see UFOs. I ask a British couple we had met, Carl and Beccy, what were the chances
of seeing anything if we went out. "Go
out around 2AM," answered Beccy. "You will see stuff." We didn't have to wait
that long. Around 10PM we see a light over Rachel and hear sonic booms.
The drawing below describes this event, as the object crossed the sky from
right to left. We saw similar occurrences several times that night. We
went back inside and told them that we were heading out to Black Mailbox.
"Black Mailbox" and Disappearing Cars
They joined us 19.8 miles away at
Black Mailbox a short time later. Carl is retired SAS (British Special Forces)
and they've both been out here before. Nearby, coyotes are howling (and I
mean a good-sized pack). You are totally exposed here, yet Carl is clearly
someone who can handle himself (if anything were to go wrong). Most people
might not want to stray too far from their vehicles. Also, if you have any
reason to fear being under, possibly, very serious surveillance by very
serious people, this is not the place for you. Good citizens should have
nothing to be afraid of (but you will still feel very uncomfortable). The
whole thing will leave a lasting impression.
During the time we were out there, we
see cars (about four of them) coming from way off to the left, but they
never pass us. This doesn't occur to us at first, but we suddenly wonder,
where did they go? Then the lights in the sky begin. What we see is
similar to the drawing above, with the big spotlights, rumble, sonic
booms, and objects appearing and disappearing. You've never seen anything
like it.
"Do you see the problem here?" Carl asks. "How
would you describe this to anyone?"
"The big thing that I wonder is, what is the
purpose of that light?" I ask. "Why have a light?"
The Sighting
I was reminded of the time I saw the
International Space
Station pass over Yucca Valley. I thought it was a giant spotlight, (and
possible UFO), but later learned that the ISS reflects sunlight for a few
hours each day. These objects look very similar. Is that intentional? Then
they start moving. They move a certain distance and disappear (see details
below). The lights
are about three times the size of Venus (as seen out in the desert). The
two of these performed various maneuvers (usually straight lines). They go
on and off. Carl feels that their speed is 6000 miles per hour,
but you have no point of reference. Sometimes they fly in formation. There
was another object that flew with them, much slower. At one point it
seemed to merge with one or more of the faster objects (around the time of
the photo below), but they could be miles apart in reality. I never got a
photo of the faster objects, which was what I was trying to capture
(shutter delay).
If you download this and zoom in,
it's quite unique. As you zoom in, this will
look more and more like a "flying saucer". It will also become apparent
that the lights are not at the edges of the aircraft. Why are they
arranged in a circular pattern? It makes you think they're simulating a
stereotypical UFO sighting. I would have never believed they were really
doing stuff like this if I didn't see it for myself.
This aircraft banked above a hill
directly across from Black Mailbox in perfect view of our cameras. Why?
Sequence of Events
What was photographed above was the conclusion
to a sequence of events. This initially began with the sighting of a
grouping of objects. Our notes indicate that there were three objects. We
also made a drawing the next morning (before looking at the photos) of the
grouped objects. Here are the notes of the sequence of events:
1. They are grouped.
2. Red object breaks away left (then disappears)
3. Two objects fly toward us, gradually
separating
4. They split apart
5. Left object disappears
6. Right object continues
7. Red object comes from out of nowhere
8. All objects seem to merge and they bank away
(around the time of the photos)
But What Does It All Mean, Basil?
Our new British friends believe that these
objects (some of them) are flying into and out of space. Good theory, but everything we
saw could have many explanations. They also had some
interesting ideas about an experimental propulsion system that I
wouldn't be qualified to judge the merits of. I think (to editorialize) a
lot of people might find the entire experience disturbing. "Scary" might
be going too far. I would say without reservation that this was the weirdest thing I've ever
experienced. There were four of us out there. Nobody was running
for cover as though the Martians were landing. Why, then, did the
lights that you see up there mimic every UFO sighting you've ever heard
of?
